  • What do our Education Scientists say about SET Lab?

"The SET Lab program provided a secure platform from which I could delve into action research and effect positive change in the field of Early Childhood Education. Through this process I experienced expansion in knowledge and confidence with every aspect of the operation. SET Lab consultants provided feedback and support throughout, breaking down each step so that each task was scaffolded. Upon completion, while reflecting on the finished product, I was amazed at what I was able to accomplish with the guidance and expertise of Urvi and Julia. A true growth experience of which I am proud to have been a part!"

What do our Education Scientists say about SET Lab?

“Being a part of SET Lab’s Education Scientist program grew me as an educator and a researcher. SET Lab’s program was manageable, outlined, and fun. I was exposed to new ways to look at education and action research. SET Lab’s staff seamlessly supported me on my education scientist journey through in school meetings, video chats, and more. Because of my SET Lab experience I have reinvigorated my teaching, obtained factual data for which I can use and share to advance education, and made friends and contacts along the way. The Education Scientist program with SET Lab is an unique opportunity, one not to be missed!"

    About Katherine

What do our Education Scientists say about SET Lab?

"How often do teachers have opportunities to reflect on and inquire into what we do? Not often, in my experience. Generally, running flat-out to remain stationary on the treadmill of daily and weekly job demands precludes the kind of reflection and sharing of ideas that can be a sustaining source of professional identity. The genius of SET Lab is its structure for supporting thorough-going, real research for educators by educators. The SET Lab consultants break down the process of identifying a question, they help consider a method for addressing the question through real research, and sharing at the end of it all. The consultants guide participants through each step on a schedule that takes into account the challenging reality of full-time educators. All this culminates in a conference that validates participants' efforts and offers rare opportunities to inspire and be inspired. SET Lab's educator-centric and outcomes-based emphasis on useful results is a welcome new approach to promoting and celebrating teachers' professionalism."

    What is SET Lab?

SET Lab is a nonprofit organization that is fostering the next evolution of educators: Education Scientists *.

The program helps educators evolve and grow their capabilities by examining the intersection of theory and practice in education. SET Lab supports educators and administrators in conducting valuable research within their classrooms and/or schools through the SET Lab Design Thinking process. Each member (Education Scientist) in SET Lab conducts action research to examine a topic within their environment that they are interested in redesigning. The aim is for this research to be used to better teaching and learning practices and to share the findings with the greater education community. At SET, we believe every educator has the ability to redesign education.

    * Note: Education Scientist is a term coined by SET.

    Who is SET Lab for?

Educators and administrators in K-12 education.

    Our Mission

To support educators and administrators to examine and redesign their practice by enabling them to ask questions, conduct action research, and share their findings with the academic community.

  • The SET Lab Process

Each participant chooses a question they’d like to study for the course of the six month program. The question can be broad, narrow, strategic, or tactical and aim to shed light on a topic of interest within the classroom or school. SET Lab facilitators will provide a personalized action plan for each educator to develop their process and study. This plan follows the tenets and progression of design thinking:

    • Ask / Inquire - What challenge(s) are you facing?
    • Investigate / Incubate - How does current research help to frame your study?
    • Develop - How will you set up your study and collect meaningful data?
    • Launch - How will you maintain the integrity of the study?
    • Analyze/Evaluate - What conclusions can be drawn from the data?
    • Ideate/Share - How will your findings inform your future practice and inspire others toward action?

Through SET Lab, each Education Scientist receives their own blog as a platform to document their progress and action research. Subsequently, Educational Scientists, with the help of SET Lab consultants, will share their research and progress with the greater community through social media.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants are awarded a SET Lab Education Scientist certificate. Participants can note these credentials on their resumes, social media profiles, and email signatures.
